Plant Zinnias. Add a generous handful of sand to improve drainage. They are short-day plants that flower when the day length is less than 11 hours therefore they are perfect for early spring.
The soil should be free from weeds rocks sticks and other debris before planting them in it. Zinnias thrive in full sunlight and should be planted at the beginning of the warm weather season. Zinnias are best started from seed and can be sown directly in the garden after the threat of frost has passed.
Use garden compost or potting mix which contains a good amount of organic material for the best results.
Zinnias wow in almost every color of the rainbow and grow to between 12 and 40 inches tall with pleasingly large flowers. Zinnias need well-draining soil to survive and thrive. Many gardeners in warmer parts of the world are able to successfully direct seed their zinnias straight into the field but here in cool Washington we start our plants in 72-cell trays in the greenhouse 4 to 6 weeks before our last spring frost. Zinnias bloom from April to November.
