Plantain Grass. Native people used to call it The Whitemans Foot because it seemed to spring up wherever the white men went. Its more akin to a hosta with its rosette of dark-green leaves with prominent vertical veins.
It can be used on its own but most commonly is sown as part of a mixed pasture sward for grazing. Major and ribwort plantain P. Potential for silage and haymaking.
Buckshorn Plantain or Plantago coronopus is also known as Starweed.
They have dense spikes of flowers which can curve upwards to around 10cm in height and are seen between May and October. They can grow in any type of soil. It is fast establishing and will be productive and persistent over a wide range of soils and climatic conditions because it has both a tap and fibrous root system. Like chicory plantain has a basal rosette arrangement of leaves and has a deep taproot that helps with drought tolerance and nutrient scavenging.
